Boston Campus Student Health Insurance
The Boston Campus offers a comprehensive health insurance plan through the Tufts Health Plan, a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) instead of a student health clinic. The plan provides primary and emergency care, major medical coverage (inpatient hospital care is fully covered), a prescription plan, annual eye exam, discounted eyewear, fitness benefits, and mental health benefits. This plan is available to full and part-time matriculated students and their eligible dependent(s). Eligible dependents include spouse, same-sex domestic partner, and child(ren).
Each semester, one-half of the annual insurance cost is billed at the "Individual" rate. The bill will be adjusted for "Two Person" or "Family" health insurance coverage after the Membership Application is submitted to the Student Advisory & Health Administration Office. A Membership Application must be completed for enrollment in the Tufts Health Plan. Students do not need to reapply for insurance each year. Students may cancel their insurance coverage at any time during the year by completing a Health Insurance Waiver Form. (See Waiver Form information below.)
The "effective date of enrollment" for new students is the first day of Orientation, not the date of application. Students are not eligible to apply for coverage or to add a dependent at any other time during the academic year unless there is a qualifying event. Qualifying events include a change in marital status; birth or adoption of a child; and loss of alternate insurance through no fault of the student or dependent. Application must be made within 30 days of the qualifying event. The effective date of enrollment must be the same as the qualifying event date. Payment is pro-rated based on the date of enrollment.
Open Enrollment for the Tufts Health Plan is September 1st of each academic year. On this date, any eligible student, including returning students who previously waived, may apply for coverage in the Tufts University Student Plan in accordance with the group contract.
Waiver of Student Health Insurance
Students are not required to enroll in the Tufts Health Plan, however, Massachusetts General Law requires students to have Health Insurance. If students wish to continue their current health coverage, they may sign a Health Insurance Waiver Form that certifies enrollment in a Health Insurance Plan that meets or exceeds the required coverage. The State's minimum requirements are listed on the Waiver Form. The Waiver Form must be completed each academic year prior to registration.
Immunization Records
All full and part-time students, regardless of age, must comply with the Tufts University immunization requirements and Massachusetts General Law (105 CMR 220.600). Questions regarding the Boston Health Sciences Campus immunization requirements should be directed to the Student Advisory & Health Administration Office.
An Immunization Form, with a list of Immunization requirements, can be found at: http://www.tufts.edu/saha/forms.html.
