Alumni Email enhanced with increased spam, virus protection
February 13, 2006--Good news for all you alumni email forwarding users! We're excited to announce recent improvements including enhancements in spam filtering, virus protection, and the ability to forward from one alumni email address to another institution's alumni email address. Many of you have given us feedback about these issues so we've worked with our online community provider, Harris Connect, to help meet your needs.
Enhanced Spam Filtering
As part of ongoing efforts to identify spam reduction opportunities for the alumni email service, an additional layer of spam filtering has been implemented. While these measures will not completely eliminate spam from being delivered, you should expect to see a reduction in the amount of spam being forwarded via this service. Further exploration into other methods to reduce the amount of spam will continue.
Virus Protection
Another improvement to alumni email is the implementation of virus checking on all attachments sent via the forwarding service. More than 40,000 viruses are checked and the virus database is updated hourly. No email with attached, detected viruses
will be forwarded. The sender of the virus will be notified via a bounceback email message indicating that a virus was attached to their message, and therefore was not sent.
Forwarding from one alumni email address to another
Some of you may have more than one alumni email address supported by Harris Connect because you may be affiliated with more than one of the organizations for which they provide this service. In the past, an alumni email forwarding address could not be used as the destination address, i.e. mail directed to one alumni email address could not be forwarded to another. This feature is now allowed for those of you with multiple addresses. Keep in mind, the final alumni address still must have a destination address of it's own (i.e. name@alumni.university.edu forwards to username@yahoo.com).
Did you activate your alumni email forwarding address yet? An alumni email address gives you a "permanent" address so you won't have to notify everyone each time you switch your email address, plus it looks great on a resume. If you previously activated your alumni email, you can review and update your account if you think it's forwarding to an email account you no longer use. Forget your username and password? Look it up. Not a member? Register for the Online Community and activate your alumni email today.
