Alumni Weekend brings back graduates eager to reconnect
June 11, 2007--For Sandy Phillips, J52, Tufts Night at Pops is a favorite event, but the best part of Alumni Weekend was the class dinner in the Hall of Flags. “Fifty of us turned out,” she says, “and it was great to see how we’ve stayed close to each other and to Tufts for all these years.” Andrew Reback, E92, back on the Hill after a 15-year absence, was happy to learn more about exciting new directions for the School of Engineering, and caught up with nearly 75 classmates at the Burren on Saturday night. Both were among the more than 2,500 alumni who flocked to the Hill from May 17 - 20 to celebrate a reunion, reminisce about the past, and rediscover Tufts. The weekend featured popular traditions such as Tufts Night at Pops and the Candlelight Procession and some surprises: a record number of alumni celebrated their first Cirque d’Elephant, the new all-alumni party that transforms the Gantcher Center into a glittery, circus-themed party. They also enjoyed a picnic under the Jumbo tent on Saturday, and met accomplished faculty and alumni at the ever-widening range of Super Seminars. TUAA president Sunny Breed, J66, G72, said she was pleased to see a strong turnout, and in particular noted that the Class of 1957, returning for their 50th, brought back more than 200 graduates, while the Over 55 Luncheon for those celebrating post-50th reunions attracted 385 alumni with an unabated fondness for their alma mater. Most impressive, she said, was the long line of Brown and Blue that goes back seven decades. Looking ahead to 2008 already?
