April 10, 2007--Over the past winter a grass-roots group of young alumni from NYC banded together on a mission to reconnect young graduates, show their school spirit and demonstrate that young alumni are key players in Beyond Boundaries – The Campaign for Tufts. Calling themselves the Young Friends of Tufts Advancement (YFTA), the volunteer group was the product of an innovative vision that began with Max Bernstein, A03 and Jerome Shapiro, A03.

"The Young Friends of Tufts Advancement aims to complement Tufts' Beyond Boundaries campaign in a way that appeals to the young alumni community," reports Max Bernstein, A03, who helped recruit a cadre of recent graduates from the classes of 2001–2006 as volunteers.

The culmination of long winter months of planning was a very impressive bash held at the NYC Garment District hot-spot, Stitch Bar and Lounge on Thursday, March 22, 2007. About 400 young alumni turned out to show their Jumbo spirit and love for alma mater, and that may well be a record turnout for any Tufts young alumni gathering to date.

Over the course of the evening, young alumni received a welcome from Chairman of Tufts Board of Trustees, Jim Stern, A72, and Vice President for University Advancement Brian Lee. Alumni were treated to a screening of the video, “Tufts Is…” depicting faculty, alumni and other members of the Tufts community sharing fond impressions of what makes Tufts special to them.

There was an unusual assortment of coveted door prizes which various members of the Young Friends of Tufts Advancement Committee procured for the event. Co-organizer Jerome Shapiro, A03, observed, “People were surprised that we were raffling off such lavish prizes for free. Lucky guests left with tickets to a Yankees/Sox game, The Colbert Report, Glimmerglass Opera tickets, and a $200 restaurant gift certificate, to name a few."

Young alumni made solid contributions to the Tufts Annual Fund at the door and recent donors were recognized on poster lists at the venue. Bernstein noted, “We were pleased to see people making donations. However, the primary goal of the event was to educate young alumni about the value of their annual gift.”

Moving forward, YFTA hopes to inspire recent graduates in other cities to come together in show of support for Tufts. The superb teamwork from dedicated committee members deserves mention and the Young Friends of Tufts Advancement includes: David Baumwoll, A06, Max Bernstein, A03, Michael Cherney, A05, Pauline Eveillard, A05, Anna Filatov, A04, Grace Gan, A04, Jonathan Kruesi A05, Justine Pokoik, A04, Greg Propper, A01, Gabriel Rincon, A04, Jerome Shapiro, A03, Eric Stern, A03.
