In her first book for the general public, dyslexia expert Maryanne Wolf probes how we learn to read and how the development of these skills transforms our brains and how we see the world. Described as an "eloquent and impassioned look at reading, its effect on our lives, and why it matters so greatly in a digital age," Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain chronicles the origins of written language and the journey of reading's development over the course of a single child's life, showing why a growing percentage of children have difficulty mastering reading. 
Maryanne Wolf, Professor of Child Development, holds the John DiBiaggio Chair of Citizenship and Public Service and is director of the Tufts Center for Reading and Language Research. Devoted to helping children overcome barriers to reading, she has contributed pioneering research in the detection and treatment of dyslexia. Her work has led to tests and tools now used in literacy programs around the world. Wolf joined Tufts' Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development in 1987 and was named a professor in 1999. A graduate of St. Mary's College/Notre Dame, Wolf earned a master's at Northwestern and her doctorate at Harvard. Her honors include: National Teaching Award for Four-Year Universities from the American Psychological Association; Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award, Massachusetts Psychological Association; a Fulbright fellowship; the Norman Geschwind Lecture Prize from the International Dyslexia Association; and appointment as executive editor in the United States for the journal Dyslexia.
