Island Life in Malta and Sicily
Dates: April 30 – May 8, 2008

Description: Join us on a nine-day journey to the historic Mediterranean islands of Malta and Sicily, the crossroads of civilizations for countless millennia. Spend three nights on Malta, where we will walk in the footsteps of St. Paul; see the Megalithic stone temples of Hagar Qim and Tarxien, older than Stonehenge by 2,500 years; stand before Valletta's Palace of the Grand Master, the medieval seat of the Knights of the Order of St. John; and step back into the Middle Ages in the walled city of Mdina, the island's ancient capital.

From Malta, we will cross over to Sicily aboard a high-speed ferry for four nights in Siracusa, once acclaimed by the Roman orator and statesman Cicero as "the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all." From here, we'll explore Sicily's wealth of Greco-Roman monuments on guided excursions to the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Neapolis, founded in the 8th century B.C., and Agrigento, famed for its 2,500-year-old temples, and to the charming town of Taormina, located within sight of Mt. Etna and the Mediterranean Sea. Our program includes accommodations in first-class hotels in Sliema, Malta, and Siracusa, Sicily; a specially arranged Village Forum with local residents about life in Sicily; and a series of exclusive lectures and excursions that will bring to life the richness of Malta and Sicily.
