| Provence Escapade |
| Dates: November 22 29, 2008 |
Description: Walk in the footsteps of Roman statesmen, celebrated artists and prolific writers on this special program in the enchanting Provence region. Discover the landscapes that inspired Cézanne and van Gogh while admiring the well-preserved ancient ruins and the natural scenery of the area. Our home base of Aix-en-Provence, a town of 17th-and 18th-century architecture and quaint cafés, is close to many of Provence's storied highlights and little-known treasures; the flexibility of this unique travel program allows you to enjoy them at your own pace, exploring the region independently or joining one of the many optional excursions. Tour Aix-en-Provence, the city of "kings and counts," and view the Mazarin Quarter, conceived by Archbishop Mazarin, brother to the Cardinal, or the lively and attractive Cours Mirabeau. Visit the fishing port of Cassis and its Calanques, the picturesque small coves along the Provençal coast. Explore the Château d'Ansouis, originally built as a hilltop fortification in the 10th century, and the charming villages of the Luberon. Discover Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its remarkable Roman Amphitheater, or wander the historic streets of the fortified city of Avignon, with its magnificent Palace of the Popes and the nearby Pont du Gard. Whether you choose to join all or none of the optional excursions, take home special memories of Provence from a journey that you have made uniquely your own!
