Oceans cover 71 percent of the surface of the planet; life began
there and, interacting with the atmosphere, oceans ensure the continued
survival of most life on Earth. Yet even as we begin to explore
these many connections, the fate of our oceans is becoming a troubling
question. In the following pages, we discuss how human activities
are disrupting communities of life beneath the waves. From each
perspective--two Tufts graduates and a Tufts biologist --we can
begin to see how the choices we make about oceans today are inherently
linked to the future of our blue planet.
