Internships & Opportunities:
>>BUMP (Boston Urban Music Project)

The mission of BUMP (Boston Urban Music Project, Inc.) is to fortify urban youth by helping them gain musical proficiency, cultural literacy and personal resilience through African Diasporic music and mentoring. BUMP has two main initiatives: the BUMP Musicology Program and BUMP House.

BUMP is in the strategic planning stage of our ambitious and visionary BUMP House Initiative. The BUMP House is a musical village where youth experience the artistic heritage, excellence, and resilience of the African Diaspora. The BUMP House will accommodate an Instrumental Music Program of instrument/voice lessons and performing ensembles; a Musicianship Program of music history, culture and theory classes; a Media Center with cutting edge media and technology resources; and the BUMP Fellows & Mentors Certification Programs in partnership with local universities preparing music education students to teach BUMP House courses and BUMP Musicology; and providing coop opportunities in the business and practice of music education.

BUMP Musicology is our popular multi-faceted exploration of the rich social, historical and expressive traditions of African American music, offered in urban schools and community centers since 2007. The program provides detailed lesson plans, curricular and audio-visual materials, hands-on activities, instruction and instructional support. This resilience-building program enthusiastically engages youth in discovering the rich heritage of African Folksong, Negro Spirituals, Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Art music, Caribbean, R & B, and Hip-Hop through a variety of artistic domains—singing, playing instruments, games, visual art and more—and makes connections across the curriculum to math, ELA and social studies. This robust class combines active musical performance with active learning about the roles that music plays in our daily lives and in social movements. BUMP Musicology brings a cohesive, progressive, creative educational and character-building experience with measurable outcomes to underserved and at-risk youth.
BUMP Musicology serves youth in school and out-of-school time settings including public and private schools, after-school programs, and community centers. The BPS Arts Expansion Fund at EdVestors recently awarded BUMP a $25,000 grant, citing BUMP Musicology as one of a select group of “programs most likely to expand arts education opportunities to more Boston Public School students.” BUMP is gearing up to serve 1000 students in the 2010-2011 school year.

Research shows that music study leads to success in learning, in developing intelligence, in society and in life. BUMP programs are more than music study; they are designed to instill the resilience youth need to stay in school and achieve academic excellence; to enhance creativity and to boost cultural knowledge. BUMP programs combine cutting edge ethno-musicological research, social-emotional learning strategies, and music curricula that address state and national standards. BUMP brings a cohesive, progressive, creative educational, developmental learning and character-building experience with measurable outcomes to underserved and at-risk youth.
