Tufts HFES 1 October Meeting Minutes

10/1/96 Minutes

Well, turnout for tonight's meeting was a little sparse, but that's ok. Thanks to the 7 people who showed up tonight to help plan out the semester, and have a fun time as well. Here's an account of what happened tonight.

We distributed applications for both the National and New England Chapters of the Society. When you join, you get some cool free literature, valuable contacts, and recognition in the field. It's definately worth it. Todd will put some blank applications on the HF bulliten board in Anderson by the end of this week.

Also handed out were new copies of the Info Book. If you need one, please talk with any of the officers (Todd, Ross, Mike, and Mary) or visit the ME or PSY offices to get one. Or, you can download one here.

Jon Li will be trying to get us a date for a trip to the MIT Media lab. This sounds really cool and I'd like everyone to try to fit this into their schedules when we find out when it is. If you would like some more info about the lab itself, contact Jon (jli), Todd (tchapin), Mike (mmakunas), or visit the MIT web page.

There might be a plan in the works to visit IDEO Product Development in Lexington. They do some good HF work there. Cool stuff.

Mary (mtownse1) will be arranging with the NE chapter a joint meeting. This is a good chance to get to know some professionals in the field and spread your name around. Good for internships and jobs after graduation.

Brad Helies (bhelies) has volunteered to run the t-shirt design contest. Basically, send him email about what type of shirt you think would be cool for us to do. The winner will get a free t-shirt. Everyone else interested will have to pay for their shirt at cost, plus a little extra for the contest winner's. I've heard some great ideas. Let's try to have a decision on the designs at the next meeting.

Julie Guinn gave us a small report on the HFES Technical Groups. Basically, she emaile for applications to the groups and got them in the mail. Technical Groups are special interest groups within the Society to discuss specific topics, like aging and it's effects, computer use and interface design, product design, etc. Check the web site for more information on how to get more info. ;)

Todd will be arranging a tour of the Lotus Development Usability labs after we get a firm date on the MIT media lab trip. He'll let you all know. One note for trips. Most will likely happen on Friday afternoons or Saturdays. If those days are bad for you in general, please email Todd (tchapin) and let him know what trips you think you might be interested in. We'll try to work things out.

**** The next meeting will be on 10/16 at 7:30pm, in Anderson 212. We'll be alternating nights. The fourth meeting of the year will be on a different night. This is to try to give as many people as possible a chance to go to a meeting at least once a month. ****

If anyone is interested in helping Todd maintain the web page, please let him know. Please?

Julie Guinn has graciously volunteered to maintain the HF bulliten board which is in Anderson Hall on the second floor. Would anyone like to Wdo the one in the Psychology building, outside of Prof Soraci's office?

Rachel Namoff has volunteered to start organizing a chalking campaign for sometime this semester or next semester. We kind of decided to wait until Major's Week in the Spring, so as to inform people when they are deciding what to do for 4 years, what one of their options are. Basically, for now, she is collecting cool facts and sayings and stuff to write all over campus next semester. If you think of anything interesting, fun, or cool, please email her at rnamoff.

The intern panel which we mentioned during the first meeting will be sometime in late October. If you worked in an internship (or currently are working in one) which you feel is interesting and would like to tell other people about it, please email Todd and let him know. The purpose of this panel is to let people know what types of internships are out there and where they are. Hopefully, this will help people decide what they would like to look for and give them a direction to start in. Look for more news on this soon.

Jon Li is working on an idea for next semester: inviting industry personell on an every-other-week basis to talk about their work, or a project, or just something interesting, cool, or fun. If you'd like to help, please send him some email.

That's about it. The next meeting is on 10/16 at 7:30 in Anderson 212. Email will be sent as a reminder, and look in the Daily for an annoucment.

Again, thanks to everyone who came tonight.
