Hi everyone, This is what happened at the HFES meeting on April 3. Gwyn Hainsworth, from the Programs Abroad Office, spoke to us about the Tufts in London program and how it is possible to take Ergonomics classes there. Here is a brief overview of what she said. The Tufts in London program takes place at University College London, which is one of the top schools in the country. It is a full year program. The application deadline is February 1. People generally go during their junior year, although it is possible to go during your senior year. You must have a 3.0 to be eligible. The cost is equivalent to a full year at Tufts, and all financial aid transfers to pay for the program. The money covers room (in a dorm), board, tutorial assistance, reimbursements for many fun things (like trips and shows). Jaki Leverson, who works there, makes sure you have everything you need. Walter Chefitz, a senior Engineering Psychology major at Tufts, went to London last year and discovered the possibility of taking Ergonimcs classes there (he is our pioneer). He described the program to us. The ergonomics classes are all at the graduate level, although they figured out ways to accomodate him as an undergrad. Although he was in graduate level classes, he got undergraduate credit. He was able to fulfill many of his requirements with the classes he took there. Some sample classes he took were Applied Experimental Psychology (which counted as Psych 130), Human-Machine Interaction (which counted as ENP 162) and Organizational Psych (which counted as Psych 17). He said that his classmates were very dedicated and that the professors were top-notch. He also said that they are eager to have more Tufts ENP students come. If you have any questions about this program, please contact Gwyn Hainsworth, who works in the Programs Abroad office on the first floor of Ballou, and/or Walter Chefitz, who can be contacted by email at wchefitz@emerald.tufts.edu Please spread information about this program to underclassmen who may be interested. At the meeting we also held elections for next year! Mona Patel was elected president, Ruile Chou was elected vice president, Jared Townshend was elected treasurer, and Heather "Taugi" Diaz was elected Web Mistress. Also many people said that they will be active members of the society! The Schools of Occupational Therapy and Engineering are sponsering a speaker on Wednesday, April 9 at 5:00-8:00. Dr. Margaret Bullock, Dean and Head of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Queensland in Australia, will be talking about "Ergonomics and Design." Please come to this event. It should be very interesting. (For more information contact Jon Li at jli@emerald...). There will also be a speaker from Design Continuum very soon. Stay tuned for announcements. Also, Beth Loring from IDEO will speak on Friday April 25th at 3:00 pm. We'll send you information about the location. The cannon painting has been postponed until Monday the 14th. Todd has more HFES t-shirts. Buy them for yourself and your family and friends. Everybody loves them, and they are only $10. Todd also has several interesting handouts, including the revised booklet about the major, applications for the national and New England HFES and handouts from Ron Shapiro's presentation about looking for a job in Human Factors and fun games related to Human Factors. Just ask Todd for these documents. Also, on a different note, Jon Li is looking for people to participate in the Dragonboat festival on June 8. Contact him (jli@emerald...) if you would like to help row a long teak boat (no experience necessary).
