********************************************************************************* Graduate Research Assistantship in Human-Machine System/Interface Design: ********************************************************************************* The Department of Industrial Engineering at Mississippi State University is seeking a research assistant for Spring semester, 1997 to work in the area of human factors in automation, specifically human-machine system/interface design. The Department is currently conducting research in the following areas: (1) the effect of level of automation on human control of complex, dynamic systems including telerobots (semi-autonomous remote manipulators), (2) the effects of automated system interface design and cognitive workload on teleoperator performance and human controller decision making, and (3) the effects of spatial and temporal disturbances in visual and control feedback on teleoperations. The available position will support project efforts in these areas as part of a half-time appointment (20-hrs. per week). Specifically, the following responsibilities will be assigned: (1) literature work, (2) lab equipment setup and integration, (3) software prototyping, (4) human subjects research, (5) statistical data analysis, and (6) technical report writing. Applicants are expected to qualify for admission to either of two graduate programs comprising the Master of Science (Industrial Engineering) or the Doctor of Philosophy (Engineering). Persons applying should be highly-motivated and capable of self-directed work with good oral and written (English) communication skills. Special consideration will be given to applicants with coursework in human factors and statistics. The successful candidate will be supported for 1-yr. with a possible 2-yr. extension. Support will include an annual stipend of $12,000 plus tuition waiver. In addition, practical experience is available through internships with local industry leading to full-time employment.
