RESEARCH POSITIONS IN AVIATION HUMAN FACTORS The Cognitive Science Lab (CSL) at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC has two openings available immediately. One position is for a postdoctoral research fellow and the other for a graduate research assistant. Both positions involve research on human factors in Free Flight, a new concept for scheduling and maneuvering of aircraft so as to achieve flexible, fuel-efficient flight paths with minimal delays. Successful implementation of Free Flight will require new technologies (e.g., GPS, the Global Positioning System), new display and automation aids (e.g., CDTI, Cockpit Display of Traffic Information; CTAS, Center-Tracon Automation System), new algorithms (e.g., for conflict resolution and conflict probing), and new procedures (e.g., for coordination between pilot, controller, cockpit automation, and ground automation resources). These research positions offer a unique opportunity to engage in an interdisciplinary project that will examine the human factors issues associated with these new technologies and procedures. The project is being conducted in collaboration with the National Aerospace Lab (NLR), Amsterdam, Netherlands. Both the CSL and NLR research groups will examine both air and ground issues associated with Free Flight, while focusing on the implications for the ground controller and on pilot- controller-automation coordination. The project is supported by a grant from NASA Ames Research Center for a duration of three years. Salaries and benefits for both positions are competitive. Applicants for the postdoctoral position should have received or be about to receive a Ph.D. in human factors, cognitive science, or experimental psychology, while those for the graduate research assistant position should have a Bachelors or Masters degree in one of these or related fields. Experience with aviation is desirable but not essential.
