Co-op Position: Human Computer Interaction and Healthcare ___________________________________________________________ Overview: The Center for Applied Medical Informatics (CAMI) at Michigan State University Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies (MSU/KCMS) is recruiting for a HCI (human factors) and healthcare co-op (intern) position (4-8 months). We have openings for the Summer and/or Fall of 1998. Job description: The co-op participates in applied medical informatics work including user-centered design of health care information systems. This person assists CAMI faculty in proposing and executing research and development projects in this arena. Example projects include comparative usability evaluations of electronic medical records; and developing requirements for telemedicine systems in the home using contextual inquiry. In addition, the co-op will assist with teaching and training of medical and graduate students in applied medical informatics. Education: Working toward an advanced degree in Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, or Library and Information Science. Experience: First-hand experience with human factors methodology, including heuristic evaluation, contextual inquiry, and low-fidelity (iterative) prototyping is necessary. Hands-on experience in a health care setting is a definite plus. Knowledge and experience with a wide variety of partners on design projects (e.g., government agencies, private corporations, hospitals) a plus. Experience with computers and software, including word processing, graphics, and presentation packages required. Experience with video communication systems, local area networks (LAN), medical information search software is desirable. Personal Characteristics: We are seeking students with professional demeanor and a self-starter attitude. Students should be able to independently organize and prioritize own activities, as well as working in a team-oriented environment. Setting: MSU/KCMS is one of six campuses for the MSU College of Human Medicine; and closely allied with Kalamazoo's two tertiary care hospitals, Borgess and Bronson. In addition to 44 third and fourth-year medical students, there are over 150 resident physicians in nine residency programs: internal medicine, pediatrics, combined medicine-pediatrics, family practice, psychiatry, general surgery, orthopedics, emergency medicine, and transitional.
