Tufts Friends of Israel
Julia Hoffman
Tufts Friends of Israel is an independent multi-ideological group that celebrates Israeli culture, provides educational programs on Middle East politics, engages in a campus Arab-Jewish dialogue, and promotes volunteer and study programs in Israel. Last year, Tufts Friends of Israel hosted over 500 students for the Northeast Regional AIPAC Conference.

If you want to get involved with community service projects, learn about the connection between Judaism and social justice, and/or change the world, this is the committee for you! Past projects have focused on alleviating homelessness and poverty, visiting the elderly, and helping children.

Highlights from last year included a Chanukah first night celebration, apples and honey in the campus center, and seder kits to-go. In the dorms, in the Hillel Center, and on the quad, we welcome your efforts to develop creative ways to celebrate Jewish holidays at Tufts.

Shabbat

Shabbat at Tufts is one of the highlights of the week for many students, and a wonderful way to relax, connect with friends, and enjoy dinner outside of the dining hall. Exactly how do you turn Friday night into Shabbat? Help us plan captivating programs, create ambiance, and shape the Shabbat experience at Tufts.

Read By The River
Melissa Sobel
Read by the River is an annual carnival that focuses on early childhood literacy. Throughout the year, the Read by the River/Advocacy committee works on literacy projects including the carnival and an annual book drive. Other ideas that have been floated include replacing outdated textbooks, working in Medford public school classrooms, and publishing materials aimed at fighting illiteracy.

Education is a key component of Judaism, and this committee focuses on interesting and enjoyable ways to pursue that education. Amongst other programs, top teachers, free kosher deli, and fascinating discussions entertain students for Lunch 'n Learns. Students also focus on making a connection with the Pan-African Alliance and running joint programs. So whether you want to learn about different aspects of Judaism, cross-cultural alliances, or Jewish Humor, if you are interested in education, this committee is for you!

In addition to organizing services for Shabbat and Holidays. The committee also sponsors social, educational, and social justice programs such as a weekly Beit Midrash, Challah baking, and Mincha, Ma'ariv, and Mooshu (which is a weekday service followed by Kosher chinese food from Brookline).

This committee helps Jewish first year students to make a fun, smooth transition to Tufts. This year kicked-off with an awesome bagel brunch followed by a scavenger hunt throughout Boston! The most exciting event is an overnight retreat planned entirely by first years for first years. Welcome class of 2006!

Jewish and Queer Students at Tufts (JQUEST)

JQUEST is dedicated to serving the
needs of queer students within the Jewish community. Programming may include social, educational and religious events based on student interest. Last year, the group held an oneg discussion about the movie Trembling Before G-d. The group seeks to reinforce Hillel's role as a safe space for all individuals. JQUEST welcomes all students with an interest in learning how Jewish and Queer identities intersect.

Join us for weekly Friday night services with guitar and great singing. Every year, Kesher sponsors a Regional Reform Shabbaton, Havdallah and Fun Nights, and more.

Shir Appeal*
Do you like to sing? Audition for Tufts only Jewish a cappella singing group!! The group practices weekly and performs on campus and in the Boston Jewish community and travel to places like Florida, Chicago and California. Last year we co-hosted a giant Jewish a capella festival, attended by over 250 people.
*"Shir" is the Hebrew word for song, and "Peal" is the Hebrew word for elephant.

Work on an issue of Hillel's literary magazine! Whether you like to write, draw, take photos, or do production, the literary magazine has something for everyone!
