Jeffrey A. Summit, rabbi and ethnomusicologist, recorded the music and spoke to men and women at five Jewish worship communities in Boston, including Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, the Bostoner Hasidim and a "new-age" havurah (fellowship group). His book The Lord's Song in a Strange Land: Music and Identity in Contemporary Jewish Worship (Oxford University Press, 2000) explores cultural and religious identity through an examination of music and prayer in five Boston congregations. The book includes a CD with vibrant examples of the music sung in each of these communities. At the end of the book, he takes a "walk across the street" and shows how Catholics and Protestants are dealing with the same issues as they negotiate the choice of music in Christian worship. Rabbi Lawrence Kushner called this work "a musical feast. Required reading for anyone who ever hopes to sing a hymn." Elie Wiesel said that this book was a "superb way of understanding what keeps Jewish communities inspired and motivated." Harvard Music Professor Kay Kaufman Shelemay called the work "an eye-and ear-opening exploration" that "takes insider ethnography home to Boston." ...more reviews |
