The Afro-Semitic Experience is an ensemble of African-American and Jewish-American musicians who are dedicated to preserving, promoting and expanding the rich cultural and musical heritage of the Jewish and African diaspora. Imagine a band that understands and can present interpretations of music from traditions as rich as Gospel, Klezmer, Yoruban drumming, Nigunim, Synagogue chant, Spirituals, Funk, and Swing and you have the Afro-Semitic Experience. This is a group that is as comfortable playing a freylakh as they are swinging a blues, that knows how to playing either a bulgar or some funk. Multi-cultural soul.
In performance they also frame their music, telling stories about what the pieces mean, how they related to us as individual members of a community, and how they reflect upon the relations between Blacks and Jews.
The Afro-Semitic Experience truly is a Cross-Cultural band that delivers a positive and meaningful musical message about Black-Jewish Relations.
Through their concerts, recordings, and workshops they are actively creating an artistic response to anti-Semitism and racism of all forms.
