Description of the UDS apparatus
The apparatus used for this research has been designed and assembled at
MIT where different aspects of spray forming are currently studied. The
TSM group works in close collaboration with the DBM group at MIT and the
construction of a similar apparatus is near completion in Bray Laboratoty
where the Thermal Spray Manufacturing Lab is located.
The structure for mounting the apparatus has been assembled. It is made
from U channels, and has overall dimensions of 30*30*85 inches. The Pyrex
glass chamber with an internal diameter of 9 inches and 1 meter long has
been received. It will be evacuated and thereafter pressurized with inert
gas. All the parts of the apparatus have been machined and assembled. The
video system as well as all the control panels are set-up. The first
trial with tin are expected for the end of August 1995.
In an another important development the TSM group has received about 80
pounds of aluminum alloys with different alloying elements such as iron
from ALCOA to study process-structure-property relationships of theses
alloys. The group has also presented and published a paper on
production of solder balls (2) in collaboration
with the DBM group at MIT and ORNL.
