Mystery Scientist Student Instructions

Over the course of the next week or two, your teacher will be revealing a clue or two per day regarding a mystery scientist. Your job, should you choose to accept it (and you will if you want a good grade), is to use the clues to decipher 1) who the mystery scientist is and 2) how each clue relates to the scientist. When each clue is presented each day, write down as much information as you can about the visual clue. You should then research the clue using the library, the internet, and any other acceptable resources at your disposal. The clues tend to be more difficult at first and become progressively easier each day. Remember, correctly guessing the mystery scientist is not enough; you also have to relate each clue to the scientist. Aye, there’s the rub. After you have done your research, you will prepare a solution paper to turn in on the date selected by your teacher. Your solution should be composed in this order:

  1. Identification, date, and period number in the top right hand corner of your paper.
  2. One sentence identifying the mystery scientist. (e.g., The mystery scientist for this module is Stanley Miller.)
  3. A 1-2 paragraph mini-biography on the scientist, summarizing his or her milestones and career, and highlighting any noteworthy achievements that distinguished this particular scientist.
  4. Lastly, using a neat, numbered list, identify each of the clues and clearly elaborate in 1-2 sentences how each clue relates to the scientist.

A sample rubric is enclosed below so that you can see how you would be assessed on this project. Good luck and happy sleuthing!

Mystery Scientist Rubric

Assessment
Total Points
Student has correctly identified the mystery scientist (20 points)*
Mini-biography is well written, demonstrating proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, and structure. Scientist’s milestones and career are accurately summarized, while briefly highlighting top achievements. (30 points)

Clues are properly identified with correct correlation to the scientist. (50 points)

_____ (# of correct clues) x 5 points/clue = ______

Student Total Score

* Students who fail to correctly identify the mystery scientist would obviously earn a zero out of 100, which may or may not be too severe a penalty. An alternative for these students might be to return the solution to the student with the correct scientist identified and allow the student to provide a revised solution (with a maximum grade of 80/100 for the second solution).
