Poster Vernal pools are temporary wetlands found throughout the United States. They are isolated, generally small, wetlands which fill with rain or snowmelt and gradually disappear through evaporation and water uptake by plants. Because they are fish-free and temporary, vernal pools have a unique and interesting assemblage of plant and animal life. "Vernal Pool Life" depicts some of the animals, both vertebrate and invertebrate, which might be found in a New England vernal pool. Many of these organisms, or ones similar to them, are found in pools in other areas of the United States. For more information on vernal pools, go to: |
