Stellar Evolution

Stellar Evolution from Science to Science Fiction and Illustration
June 28 - July 2

The online application and additional workshop information are available here
APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 1, 2010

Astronomical artwork and science fiction have fired our imagination and helped maintain our interest in the exploration of space for decades. This workshop uses astronomical artwork and illustration and the speculation and creativity of science fiction literature to enable students to critically assess scientific information. Participants will use an array of interdisciplinary materials from science fiction to illustration to ice core records and image analysis software to study high-energy phenomena associated with stellar evolution. Classroom-ready activities, performance tasks and scoring rubrics utilizing multi-wavelength images of these phenomena, aligned to National Science Standards and Benchmarks, will be used to involve participants in a series of activities designed to show how scientists view, study, and examine stellar processes and the future of the universe. The location for this workshop is the McDonald Observatory in Ft. Davis, Texas. Tours of the telescopes, discussions with the research astrophysicists in residence, and nighttime observations are an integral part of this workshop experience. Sponsored by NASA, the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Chandra X-Ray Center. Workshop conducted by Donna L Young.
