There have been problems in the past with cab drivers trying to find South Hall on the Tufts University campus. (Last summer a taxi driver threatened to leave one of my participants on the sidewalk because he could not find South Hall!) So if you are taking a taxi to the dorm please have these directions with you - you will probably need them. Before citing these directions give the taxi driver the following key words: Tufts University - West Somerville/Medford line (Tufts actually is located in both towns), Broadway Avenue in Somerville, Powderhouse Rotary in Somerville... if your taxi driver is already confused - find another taxi! Broadway enters the Powderhouse Rotary.... from the rotary exit onto Powderhouse Blvd. You will see an athletic field on your right that is part of the university. You will pass a large dorm complex - this complex contains South Hall. Now to ACTUALLY GET to South Hall continue on Powderhouse Blvd until you get to a yellow blinking light. Turn right at the yellow blinking light. You are now on Packard Avenue. Take the first right - this is Talbot Avenue. At the stop sign turn right again. You are now on Latin Way. Continue down Latin Way - ignore the first " maybe this is a street maybe not" driveway and then turn left. If you go any further you will have to come back anyway because it dead-ends. Now South Hall is on your right. There will be nothing obvious to let you know that you are there. There is a little bit of parking on the left and on the right. You will see a walkway on the right that goes down a little hill and curves to the left to an entrance. That is South Hall and the registration table is on your left after you enter. These directions may seem easy... but nothing involving directions is easy in Beantown. The dorm will have a list of your names. I have requested rooms with A/C ... unless there is some major global climate change you will not need A/C ... we've had more precipitation than Seattle for the past 3 months. The extreme dry conditions we experienced last year are no longer a problem in Massachusetts. If the sun does manage to shine on us insist on your A/C room ... sometimes they sort of disappear from the availability list.....and if we are going to have high humidity it will happen without fail during my workshop. Those of you with cars also make sure that you get a parking pass .... parking is a nightmare - so are the parking violation prices... they have no mercy and take no hostages. They should also have campus maps available for you ... because I am going to take them over myself. HOWEVER - the registration table is handled by students .... they have more pressing problems than taking care of you - like clothes, makeup, dating, you know - the really important things ... and asking for directions will not help much. The Wright Center is in the Science and Technology building which is the only academic building on the "other" side of the tracks - in this case the commuter rail line... and though this building houses some of the best cutting-edge research in the biomedical engineering field, this is basically a liberal arts college. Most students never HEARD of the Science and Technology Center - they have never been on this side of the tracks. When you ask them where this place is they will say "huh?" I would encourage those of you flying in not to even consider renting a car. Boston not only has the infamous BIG DIG (it has been featured on NBC's "Fleecing of America" not once but TWICE), it also has the most confusing traffic patterns in the country, and the most hostile drivers (who by the way are extremely proud of this fact and seem to go out of their way to ensure they keep this reputation.) There are so many traffic accidents that the police will not even come to the scene unless an ambulance is required... it is stressful enough getting through Logan and the taxi ride to South Hall. ... do not abuse yourself more than that by attempting to drive yourself. ALSO: You should write down my CELL PHONE NUMBER - several times I have talked people to the Wright Center while en route .... please do not hesitate to call if you run into difficulties with travel or the dorm. The number is 617-319-1616 ...and after registration at the Wright Center you can go over to the Cabot Center and relax after your (hopefully uneventful) journey to Boston and Tufts University! I wish you all the best of luck - see you on the 25th! |
