Toad fish are a very strong fish. They are also one of the meanest
fish. Toadfish have the ability to
crush a clam shell. They are born with diabetes. Therefore they
cannot produce insulin. Instead they
produce an alternative which basically serves the same function.
The alternative protein is studied to
compare and learn about human diabetes. Toadfishes' middle ear
is similar to the human ear. They
are being used for research on motion sickness and gravity affects
on the middle ear. In 1997
scientists are planning to send toadfish up in the space shuttle.
Sea horses are a fish and members of the leafy sea dragon family.
The ones we looked at were
about 3 inches long. The largest types of sea horses are found
in Australia. When they mate they do
a mating dance all around their tanks. They change colors at different
times of the year. They don' t
have scales. Instead they have bony plates. Their diet consists
of eating small crustaceans.
Eel pout are also known as ocean pout or ling. This fish resembles
a large tadpole with two big
pectoral fins. Found in the waters off Woods Hole and the east
coast the eel pout is continuously
hungry. After first observing them bob their heads in and out
of the water I thought they had
something in common with dogfish and sensed an electromagnetic
field. It turns out that they were
just looking for a handout.
There are about three different varieties of sea robins. They
are warm water fish. They have
chemoreceptors in leglike appendages which they use to gather
information about their
surroundings.
