![]() Just like being there - Maurice Luker leads a virtual tour of Amiens Cathedral. A Temple to Art Maurice Luker, of the media center in the Art History department of Columbia University, showed a video that his department has produced called "A Digital Reconstruction of Amiens Cathedral." At Columbia University, all art history students study Amiens, and Luker and his colleagues have developed a multimedia presentation of the cathedral to help students to see it without actually visiting Amiens. The video they have created shows the viewer how the cathedral was designed and built, taking them through the architectural mistakes that were made, how they were fixed, and explaining the biblical system of measurement that was used throughout the construction of the cathedral. Using still images taken from all angles of each section of the interior of the cathedral, Luker's team has also created a virtual reality internet tour of the interior. This allows the students to get a close up look inside without leaving the classroom. |
Paper Maker Richard Lee, a teacher from Poland, Maine, showed participants how to make paper from natural fibers. The class had the opportunity to look at some samples he brought with him. Afterward, they were given a demonstration of how to make a small sheet of paper. Everyone made a plain sheet first, to practice the technique. It was not as easy as Richard made it look to get an even, flat surface. Fantastic fibers - Richard Lee demonstrates proper paper making techniques. For the second sheet of paper, Richard took out bags full of flowers, feathers, leaves, mica, etc. for people to arrange on the paper. The group was very creative and came up with all kinds of great paper designs. While trying their hand at paper creativity, they also learning a bit about the chemistry of paper making. Participants were also given a copy of Lee's booklet on marbling paper. Some of the participants had already experimented with paper marbling after hours in the dorms with Helen Estaphan, a teacher from Massachusetts.
