Steve Metz doing a science demo

Just like magic - GDA science department chairman, Steve Metz, mystifies fellow science teachers with his presto-changeo hat trick (enlarge image).

Now You See It,
Now You Don't

Steve Metz, chair of the science department at Governor Dummer Academy, presented his "Science 2000" program which integrates biology, chemistry, physics, etc. into a a single science curriculum.

Steve employs Piaget's theory that kids develop in stages and are unable to absorb what they are not ready to learn. He believes in teaching ninth grade students science topics that they should be able to grasp at the ninth grade level. This foundation needs to be set before moving on to more abstract topics in higher grades

Star power - Wright Fellow, Donna Young, had teachers seeing stars with the new "Hands On Astrophysics" curriculum materials (enlarge image).

Heads Up!

Donna Young shed some light on the new "Hands-On Astrophysics" curriculum she recently completed. Donna says the new materials give teachers a way to teach backyard astronomy with no past knowledge or experience. The curriculum is interdisciplinary and could be used to teach an entire school year worth of astronomy, or it could be used in bits and pieces by anyone.
