Hands-on Practice with Hands-on Astrophysics (HOA) Activities

One of the major parts of the Space Science XI Workshop was the opportunity for participants to cooperatively work through many of the Hands-on Astrophysics Activities that are found within the curriculum kit. By allowing time to conduct the activities, participants gained both factual and conceptual knowledge about variable stars, periodicity, and related information along with the experience of working with other educators the first time through many of the activities.

Divider bar Activities that were completed during the workshop included ones on plotting the polar coordinates of northern hemisphere constellations to practice right ascension and declination; estimating the magnitude of variable stars using handouts, finder charts, and slides. Other activities that challenged the workshop participants included determining the statistical averages of the estimated star magnitudes and plotting a light curve based on the data.

It was evident from the level of activity within the classrooms, the movement between rooms, and the difficulty in assembling us as a large group again that there was much excitement and enthusiasm about the activities.
