![]() Island paradise - Teachers learned about the impact of human activity on the local shell fishery. Something Fishy is Charlie Bradley, Marion's Shellfish Officer, explained local commericial and recreational shellfishing activities to workshop participants. He also explained how to identify the different types of local shellfish. For a truly hands-on experience, many in the crowd chose to try their luck at shellfishing by using a vatiety of rakes, shovels and other specially developed. Kevin Kyle, a 12th grade student at Tabor, gave a tour of local aquaculture efforts located at the Town Landing and Tabor Academy. Kevin has developed the project out of a personal interest in marine science and has started an Aquaculture Club at Tabor. This club will be responsible for research, development and maintainence of the Tabor auqaculture program.
During the final day of the confrence the group travelled to nearby Woods Hole, MA to visit the world renown Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and Marine Biological Labratories. The first stop was at the WHOI Quesset Campus. Here they met with Dave Gallo who presented some of |
the current work that is being done at WHOI. He explained his interest in using scientific material which he and fellow researchers obtain, such as video, and making it available for educational use. Dave cited examples of how they have developed partnerships with the Discovery Channel and National Geographic in order to disseminate their information.
Teachers were then treated to a showing of the video "Ribbon of Life" which had been put together for the World Expo in Lisbon this year.
Horsing around - Teachers check out some horseshoe crabs in the Tank Room at WHOI. The second stop was at the MBL Marine Resource Center in Woods Hole, MA. Here workshop participants met with Alan Kuzirian an Invertebrate Zoologist who is an associate research scientist for MBL. Alan took them on a tour of the Tank Room where a variety of aquatic organisms are stored in salt water tanks. These specimens are used for research at MBL or shipped to other labs. He also took teachers to the aquaculture area where they develop methods to raise fish in captivity.
