Service Center: Comparative Biology Unit (CBU)

Purpose: Animal Research Facility

Major Instruments/Services: The unit offers a wide range of services, including: comprehensive animal care, transgenic rodent breeding services, veterinary surveillance, diet preparation and individualized animal dietary services, animal monitoring, surgery and necropsy

Fee: Yes

Access: Requires an ARS (USDA) permit to regional ARS in Philadelphia (typically requires justification for need to use the facility and permit typically takes several months to obtain)

Level of Service:

• Level 1: Fee for full-service facility. User only needs to bring a sample, the facility does the rest.
• Level 2: Do-it-yourself facility with full-time technical support.
• Level 3: Do-it-yourself after intensive supervised training. Occasional trouble-shooting help is provided.
• Level 4: Limited access facility (e.g. users need to be part of a collaborative group, center, or consortium)
