Welcome to the Tufts University website for postdoctoral scholars! Tufts is a vibrant academic community with more than 175 postdocs on its Boston, Medford and Grafton campuses. We view these scholars as vital to our research and educational community and we recognize that postdocs contribute greatly to the success of Tufts. The administration is strongly committed to enriching trainees' preparation as researchers within the university setting as well as in their future career paths. This website has been designed to offer a wide range of useful information on policies, procedures and available resources that will enhance your postdoctoral experience at Tufts. We wish you much success during your time here and encourage you to experience all that Tufts has to offer!
Our Mission
The mission of the Postdoctoral program at Tufts University is to provide an environment in which Postdoctoral Associates and Fellows can broaden their research abilities and equip themselves with the skills necessary for a successful career in their chosen field. Postdoctoral Associates and Fellows at Tufts are obligated to carry out a research program to the best of their ability under the guidance of a research advisor.
The Postdoctoral Handbook provides additional policies and guidance which only apply to Postdoctoral Associates and Fellows. The Employee Handbook applies to Postdoctoral Associates, Postdoctoral Fellows and Research Associates, in some instances.
Postdoctoral Associates and Fellows may also be subject to additional policies that are specific for their host Research Advisors, Departments and Schools.

Graduate, Postdoctoral and Senior Research Awards
The National Research Council of the National Academies sponsors a number of awards for graduate, postdoctoral and senior researchers at federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. These awards provide generous stipends ($42,000 - $75,000 per year for recent Ph.D. recipients and higher for additional experience), and the opportunity to do independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the U.S. Research opportunities are open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and for some of the laboratories, foreign nationals.
Detailed program information, including instructions on how to apply online and a list of participating laboratories, is available on the NRC Research Associateship Programs website.
Questions should be directed to the NRC at 202-334-2760 or rap@nas.edu.
There will be four review cycles annually. Upcoming deadline dates are:
- November 1, 2009
- February 1, 2010
- May 1, 2010
- August 1, 2010
Applicants should begin a dialogue with prospective Advisers at the lab(s) as early as possible, before their anticipated application deadline.
Mentor an English Learner
The Asian American Civic Association, 87 Tyler Street, is looking for mentors for current students in its Adult Basic Education program. These are immigrant adult students who are planning their next steps, such as entrance into a community college or university, a job training program or beginning a job search.
As a mentor, you would meet with your student once face-to-face, then continue contact through e-mail, or in some cases telephone calls. You would provide your mentee with an interested and sympathetic ear and advice, where appropriate.
Although most ABE students are women from China, there is no expectation that you, as the mentor, would speak Chinese, and, indeed, some of the students are speakers of languages other than Chinese. For more information contact Richard Goldberg, 617-426-9492 ext: 223, or e-mail him at richard@aaca-boston.org.
