How to Apply

The Graduate Studies online application can be used to apply to any of the graduate or certificate programs offered by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering, except studio art (M.F.A.). Go to Embark.com to apply. Studio art applicants should go to www.smfa.edu and download the M.F.A. application materials. Studio art applicants should make their check payable to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and send their forms and credentials directly to the Museum School. Separate applications (including fees) are required if you apply to more than one graduate program.

Your application to all graduate and certificate programs includes:

  1. Application for admission
  2. One official copy of all college transcripts
  3. Letters of Recommendation: One for certificate programs, two for engineering management, and three for all other degree programs.
  4. Résumé
  5. Personal statement elaborating on your reasons for wanting to pursue graduate study at Tufts
  6. Application fee of $75* (non-refundable)

*The application fee is waived only for current Tufts undergraduates and graduate students, students in Tufts certificate programs, Project 1000 applicants, and IRT and McNair Scholars. No other fee waivers are considered.

All programs require a bachelor's degree. See the application requirements for individual programs (.pdf) for additional requirements, and submit the following if applicable:

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores* (use Tufts University code 3901)
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores* (use Tufts University code 3901) 
  • Portfolio on CD or DVD required for MAT Art Education applicants: Use this form.
  • Writing sample
  • Financial aid application

*Photocopies and student copies of scores are not accepted.

If you are currently enrolled as a Tufts undergraduate or are a Tufts certificate student applying to a master's or doctoral program:

**Please do not send duplicate copies of materials that you submitted electronically with your online application (for example, personal statement, résumé, letters of recommendation, etc.).

Materials submitted in support of your application must be accurate. Any information determined to be erroneous or incomplete may result in expulsion from a graduate or certificate program. Credentials received without an application form and fee are retained for only three months from date of receipt.

All materials submitted in support of an application become the property of Tufts University, and neither originals nor copies of this material will be returned or sent to a third party.
