Mission Statement

The mission of the NEPS Laboratory is to identify and characterize age-related physiological and pathological changes in skeletal muscle and related body tissues. We strive to be an international leader in research that integrates approaches from the molecular to the whole body level. We work in a collaborative environment using a translational research approach to evaluate nutritional and exercise strategies that promote healthy aging and alleviate the burden of disease. Through the use of basic, observational and intervention studies, we are committed to understanding the biological mechanisms of sarcopenia (age-associated loss of muscle mass and function) and to the evaluation of novel interventions designed to improve physical functioning and reduce disability in older adults.

Our goal through this research is to educate others and apply our findings to influence public health and policy. We are committed to disseminating this information to the scientific and medical communities as well as the public at large. We strive to generate this knowledge to help older adults age with strength, vitality, and dignity.
