Caribbean Hispanic men and women, aged 18 years and older
To determine the effect of a Hispanic Diet (low fat) and an American Diet (high fat) on levels of cholesterol and other blood markers that may increase risk of developing heart disease.
|Length of Study||
Two phases of 4 weeks each, with a break of 2-8 weeks in between phases
|# of Visits||
1 screening visit and 12 visits per study phase (3 times per week, most likely Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings
1-3 hrs per visit and one visit of 9 hrs per study phase, no overnight stays
Two diets, a low-fat Hispanic diet and a high-fat American diet. All food and beverages are provided during the two 4-week phases. We ask that you eat 3 meals per week (breakfast) at the Center.
$15 for screening visit, and $1000 for qualifying and completing both study phases

Yes, around study visits
Questionnaires, body composition and blood pressure measurements, blood and urine samples, heparin test, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and oral fat load test.

Total length of the study including resident stays and nonresident visits.
This does not mean you will be testing the entire time.
The length of time volunteers are required to stay overnight at the HNRCA. Residents have their own private room, bathroom, television, VCR, and phone during their stay.
