To determine whether 25(OH)D3 response to vitamin D3 supplementation is affected by meal condition. (You may be selected to participate in one of three groups: fasting, low-fat meal, or high-fat meal.)

| Major Exclusions |
- Liver disease, kidney disease, or gall bladder surgery
- Peptic ulcers, medications for heartburn or regular antacid use
- Use of calcium greater than 1000 mg per day
- Use of vitamin D greater than 400 IU per day
- Bariatric surgery, malabsorption
- Regular exposure to sunlight w/o sunscreen (>7hr/wk); use of tanning salon
- Allergy to egg
- Other health conditions and medications

Study diet |
If randomized to low-fat meal or high-fat meal groups, you will be given a breakfast meal on Days 1, 30, & 60. Meal consists of egg-bacon frittata with olive oil and vegetables, with Parmesan cheese topping, a slice of toast with either butter or jelly, and a mango milk smoothie (mango, milk, ginger ale, cream). If randomized to the fasting group, you will not receive a study meal but will fast for an additional 4 hours.

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), 50,000 IU capsule, one per month for 3 months.

$25 per screening visit; $220 for completion of study

Can I work? |
Visit on Day 1 (approx. 7:00 a.m.) will take 2-3 hours. Visit on Day 1 (approx. 8 p.m.) will take approximately 30 minutes. The visit on day 30 will take approximately 1.5 hours and visits on days 60, and 90 will take approximately 1 hour. The morning visits on days 1, 30, 60, and 90 are 12-hr fasting visits

- Length of study
Total length of the study including resident stays and nonresident visits.
This does not mean you will be testing the entire time.
- Residency
The length of time volunteers are required to stay overnight at the HNRCA. Residents have their own private room, bathroom, television, VCR, and phone during their stay.
- Payment
The amount of reimbursement for travel and inconvenience.
- Number of visits
Total number of nonresident visits.
- Study diet
Indicates meals which will be provided by the HNRCA
- Can I work?
Indicates if you will be able to work and if so, when.
