Commencement 2007

Michael R. Bloomberg, Tufts University welcomes you back to Medford. Your expansive and successful careers in finance, communications and public service instill enormous pride in this community. An early career on Wall Street led you to think creatively about delivering timely financial information to the marketplace. Ever the entrepreneur, your ideas evolved into the now internationally respected company and communications network known as Bloomberg L.P. Your success in business is matched by an equally successful career in public service. As the 108th Mayor of New York City, you have applied your skills as a thoughtful, decisive leader to improve the lives of millions of residents of the world's greatest city. You have strengthened public schools, reduced crime, invested in infrastructure, and restored faith in the integrity of municipal government. You have made New York more livable, more competitive and sustainable. Such extraordinary success might distance one who began life with modest means, but not you. You care deeply about others and set out personally to improve their well being. Your quiet but highly influential philanthropy reinforces our collective responsibility to help those in need. For your powerful example of active citizenship, a quality firmly embraced by Tufts, it is our pleasure to award you the degree of Doctor of Public Service, honoris causa.
