First on Czech Ice, Amputees Play Real Ice Hockey!

The host and the guest teams, Czech Republic, Prague, October 14, 2003

In collaboration with the Sparta Club, The Czech Sports Organization for Physically Disabled, the Russian Disabled Hockey Federation and the Finnish Standing Ice Hockey Association, the International Institute for Prosthetic Rehabilitation of Landmine Survivors (IPRLS) organized a 10-minute exhibition match of amputee standing ice hockey.

The match was played during the first intermission of Sparta's scheduled match on October 14, 2003, at the T-Mobile Sparta Ice Arena in Prague.

The guest team consisted of three members of the Russian National Team: Alexei Balakhontev, Captain, Iliya Efimov, and Gennady Trunin, and two members of the Finnish National Team: Ville Waaramaki, President of the Finnish Amputee Hockey Association, and Juha Lapiolahti.

The host team of six Czech amputee players included: Jirgi Jezek, Martin Otahal, Miroslav Kluc, Dvorak Karel, Josef Svoboda, and Miroslav Pribik.

The aim of this exhibition, which has been sanctioned by International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and the Czech Ice Hockey Association, was to introduce standing ice hockey to all individuals and organizations in Czech Republic interested in developing sports for persons with disability.

The coach of the guest team was Nikolai Maslov, Junior World Champion of 1978, and Vice President of the Russian Disabled Hockey Federation. The organizer of the exhibition game was Dr. Mark Pitkin, Director of IPRLS: MPitkin@Tufts-NEMC.org
