Innovations in Education Grant Overview

In recognition of the importance of teaching at Tufts, Dean Michael Rosenblatt, M.D., introduced the Innovations in Education Intramural Grant Program in 2004. This program is designed to promote and support teaching innovations developed by our faculty that will enhance the core educational programs and overall mission of Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM), including the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences.

The specific objectives of this program are to stimulate faculty to:
  • Reflect on ways to advance the mission of TUSM through curricular change
  • Develop new approaches to teaching and learning that are creative, innovative, and more effective in addressing fundamental educational and programmatic issues
  • Implement and evaluate new educational models that will reinforce our tradition of continuous improvement and teaching excellence

Proposals may focus on innovations in instruction (e.g., teaching methods for the classroom, laboratory, bedside, or faculty development), evaluation (evaluation of learner or teacher performance), or content (areas not adequately addressed in the current curriculum). Innovations that cross disciplines, years, departments, etc., are encouraged. While proposals may address issues at any level of medical or biomedical education, priority will be given to those with the greatest potential both to meet the most pressing needs and to have the maximum impact on TUSM's educational programs.

In submitting a grant proposal, preference will be given to those projects with clear applicability to all TUSM medical students versus those that may be relevant for a small number of students at a given training site. In addition, for this cycle preference will be given to projects addressing the areas list below.

  • Integration of basic science concepts into the core clerkships
  • Integration of clinical research into the core clerkships (teach students how it is applied at the bedside)
  • Projects to promote interprofessional education
  • Projects that promote team work and leadership for medical students in the clinical setting
  • Projects that create a course (or elements of a course) to promote student readiness for internship

Eligibility

All current TUSM faculty, including those based at Sackler and affiliated hospitals, are eligible. Junior faculty and faculty seeking promotion are strongly encouraged to apply.

Application Process and Award Announcement

Applicants must submit a letter of intent by January 3, 2012, and the full application by January 31, 2012. Please refer to the document Guidelines and Requirements for Submission for full application instructions.

Awards will be announced the last week of March for the funding period to begin July 1, 2012.

Funds

The total grant pool is $75,000 per year. Grants of up to $20,000 per proposal will be awarded for a 12 to 18-month period. In 2010, awards ranged from $10,000 - $15,000. Funds will be dispersed semi-anually, beginning July 1, 2012, with each installment contingent upon appropriate progress according to the proposal's timeline. The final installment will be dispersed upon submission and acceptance of the final project report. A progress report form may be found MSWord or PDF format here.

Awardees are expected to 1) attend semi-annual faculty development forums to discuss their progress with other Innovation Grant recipients, and 2) present their work at the bi-annual Mary Y. Lee, MD, Medical Education Day.

Review Criteria

Proposals will be reviewed by a Selection Committee consisting of faculty and administrators from TUSM, including the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and representatives from the affiliated hospitals. Proposals will be assessed by the Selection Committee based on the criteria below:
  • Clarity of goals and statement of need
  • Degree of innovation in content, instruction, or evaluation
  • Adequacy of evaluation methods for assessing outcomes and impact
  • Feasibility of proposed development and implementation timeline
  • Appropriateness of budget allocations
  • Sustainability after grant period
  • Extent of impact on TUSM's constituencies, curriculum, and mission
  • Potential for outside funding
The TUSM Dean will approve final grant recipients.

Grant Administration

The program will be administratively managed by the Office of Educational Affairs under the guidance of the TUSM Dean for Educational Affairs.
