Institutional Scholarships

The following list of individual scholarship funds comprises the medical school's endowed funds. Eligibility for these awards is based on need as determined from an on-time, completed financial aid application. There are no separate applications for these funds. Eligibility is determined on an annual basis.

Dr. and Mrs. Joseph I. Anton Scholarship Fund. Established in 1967 by Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Anton. The income from this fund is used to assist worthy and needy students at TUSM.

Dr. Fred and Emily Arrigg and Family Scholarship Fund. Established in 1996 by Dr. Fred and Emily Arrigg and family. The income from this fund will be awarded to a deserving student who has demonstrated excellence of character, integrity, and compassion toward patients.

Dr. Joseph R. Artale Scholarship Fund. Established in 1992 by Viola and Ronald Artale in memory of Dr. Joseph R. Artale, M'32. This scholarship is to provide support for the medical education of financially needy students who demonstrate outstanding academic credentials and commitment to the study of medicine.

Elaynne D. and Francis A. Avola Scholarship Fund. Established in 1961 by Dr. Francis Avola, A'41, M'44. This scholarship is awarded annually to a medical student based upon his or her academic merit and financial need.

Dr. Karl T. and Daisy M. Benedict Scholarship Fund. Established in 1990 by Dr. and Mrs. Benedict in honor of Dr. H. Edward McMahon, professor emeritus of pathology at the School of Medicine and Dr. T. Nichols, professor emeritus of geology at the College of Engineering. One half of the income from this fund will be awarded to a financially needy medical student and the other half to a financially needy student in the College of Engineering.

Dr. Benjamin Berkowitz Family Scholarship Fund. Established in 1991 by Attorney Elliott and Mrs. Trudi Mishara and Attorney June Berkowitz and Dr. Mordecai Berkowitz (M'56) in celebration of the 90th birthday of Benjamin Berkowitz, M.D. (M'25). This scholarship is awarded to financially needy students who plan to specialize in the field of pediatrics or who have demonstrated a dedication to the well being of all children.

Charles Beskin, M.D. (M'45) and Jeannelle Beskin Scholarship Fund. Established in 1989 by Dr. and Mrs. Beskin. This scholarship is awarded each year to financially needy medical students.

William Bingham II Scholarship Fund. Established in 1955 by a grant from the trust created by William Bingham II, of Bethel, Maine. The income is used to aid acceptable candidates from the town of Bethel, other towns in Oxford County, or elsewhere in the state of Maine.

Dr. Myer, M'29 and Anna Bloom Scholarship Fund. Established in 1987 by Dr. and Mrs. Bloom, this scholarship provides annual assistance to assist worthy and needy medical students.

Dr. Worth F. Bloom Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1986 by Hugh A. Bloom in memory of his father, Worth F. Bloom, M.D., M'25. The earnings of the fund are to provide financial aid to needy medical students, especially those who are contemplating a practice in general medicine and/or surgery.

Dr. Kenneth E. and Phyllis S. Blotner Scholarship Fund. Established in 1986 by the Blotner Family with the generous assistance of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Freeman.

Sarah A. Bond Scholarship Fund. Established in 1950 by the New England Women's Medical Society for the benefit of women students.

Isabelle Forbes Borden, Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1965 as a memorial to Dr. Isabelle Forbes Borden, a graduate of the Tufts Medical School Class of 1926. This scholarship is preferentially for the purpose of benefiting women students at the School of Medicine, particularly mature women who are entering the field of medicine.

Forester A. Clark Scholarship Fund. Established in 1989 by Dr. and Mrs. John G. Sullivan, M'66, in honor of Forester A. Clark. The income from this fund will be awarded on the basis of scholarship and need, with preference given to a Boston College graduate who matriculates at TUSM.

Clough Family Scholarship Fund. Established in 1986 by Dr. Donald M. Clough, M'43, and Dr. Robert Clough, M'77, to assist needy medical students.

Eunice and Julian Cohen Scholarship Fund. Established in 1990 in honor of dean emeritus Henry Banks by Julian and Eunice Cohen. The income from this fund is to be awarded to one or more students who show unusual academic excellence and demonstrate the need for financial assistance without regard to race, creed, or national origin.

Dr. Loretta Joy Cummins Scholarship Fund. Established in 1959 by bequest of Loretta Joy Cummins, M'03, the income to be available to assist women students.

D'Ambrosio Family Scholarship Fund. Established in 1990 by Dr. Francis A. D'Ambrosio M'45 and his wife, Jenny D'Ambrosio. The income from this fund is to be awarded to financially needy medical students who are in good academic standing.

Florence W. Duckering Scholarship Fund. Established in 1959 by the bequest of Mary Duckering, the income to be available to assist women students.

Dr. K. Gregory Elliot, M'26, Scholarship Fund. Established in 1990 by Ralph Gregory Elliot in memory of his father, a dedicated and compassionate family doctor. The income from this fund is awarded to a deserving medical student from Connecticut, preferably from Hartford County, and preferably one who intends to practice internal or family medicine.

The Song-Hi An-Foraker, M.D., and Alvan G. Foraker, M.D., Scholarship Fund in Pathology. Established in 1988 by Dr. Song-Hi An-Foraker, in memory of her husband, Dr. Alvan Foraker, to provide scholarship assistance in the field of pathology.

Dr. Richard C. and Valerie Gardner Scholarship Fund. Established in December 1981 by Richard Gardner, M'62, to provide assistance to needy medical students.

Robert H. Goldbaum Scholarship Fund. Established in 1961 by the family of Russell Goldbaum, M'48. The income is to be awarded on the basis of scholarship and need.

Dr. Edward T. and Claire Gordon and Family Scholarship Fund. Established in 1991 in loving memory of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Gordon and Dr. and Mrs. Harry Braverman. This scholarship is to be awarded annually to a deserving medical student who best exemplifies the humane approach to medical care.

Rupert and Marion Frost Hanny Scholarship Fund. Established in 1984 through the generosity of Mrs. Marion Frost Hanny in memory of her parents, Rupert Frost, E'26, and Marion Frost, J'26.

Charles Hayden Memorial Scholarship Funds. Established by the Charles Hayden Foundation and awarded on the basis of scholarship and need.

S. Marvin Herbert Scholarship Fund. Established in 1992 through the estate of Nathan Herbert, father of S. Marvin Herbert, M'57. Income from this scholarship is to be awarded annually for the tuition aid of one or more deserving medical students.

Dr. Charles A. Herrick, M'31, Scholarship Fund. Established by Dr. Herrick's patients and friends upon his retirement after 46 years of service in Manchester, Beverly, and surrounding towns. The income from this fund is awarded to any needy medical student, preferably one from Essex County, Massachusetts, or surrounding counties.

Dr. Elwood, M'36, and Mrs. Dorothy Horne Scholarship Fund. Established in 1986 by Mrs. Dorothy Horne in memory of her husband, Dr. Elwood Horne, M'36.

Drs. Abraham and Bluma Horwitz Scholarship Fund. Established in 1971 by the Horwitz Foundation in honor of Dr. Maurice Segal, A'28 and M'32, professor emeritus of medicine, to provide scholarship assistance to members of those racial, national, or ethnic groups in American society that are victims of economic deprivation.

Dorothy P. Hosmer Scholarship Fund. Established in 1987 by Miss Martha Hosmer in honor and in memory of her sister, Dorothy P. Hosmer.

Irene R. Kandzie Scholarship Fund. Established in 1990 by Dr. George J. Kandzie in memory of his mother, Irene R. Kandzie. This scholarship is to be awarded to one or more financially needy and deserving students committed to the field of medicine.

Dr. David Karp, M'34, Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1982 by Dr. David Stone in honor and memory of his father-in-law, Dr. David Karp, who dedicated his life to excellence in pediatrics and practiced medicine proudly with "art and heart."

Dr. David and Leona Karp Scholarship Fund. Established in 1982 by Dr. David and Leona Karp for worthy and needy medical students.

Dr. Frank H. Lahey Scholarship Fund. Established in 1962 by Alice Lahey in memory of her husband, a former trustee of Tufts College and professor of clinical surgery in the medical school.

Agnes M. Lindsay Scholarship Funds. Established in 1969 to provide scholarships for needy medical students, especially those from rural areas of New England who intend to practice in their home communities.

Joseph (M'35) and Adele Lipton Scholarship Fund. Established in 1986 by Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Lipton to provide scholarship assistance to medical students in financial need.

Dr. H. Edward MacMahon Scholarship Fund. Established by the gifts of alumni and friends of Dr. MacMahon, a dedicated teacher and department chairman for more than 40 years, on the occasion of his retirement as Chairman of the Department of Pathology.

Dr. John J. Magee and Dr. Margaret C. McManamy Scholarship Fund. Established in 1971 by Dr. Margaret C. McManamy, M'30, and her husband, Dr. John J. Magee, for deserving medical students.

Dr. Eleanore G. Marchand, M'21, Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1970 by the family and friends of the late Dr. Eleanore G. Marchand, M'21. An annual award is to be made to a deserving medical student in need of financial assistance consistent with Dr. Marchand's principles and her belief in service to humankind.

George Marina, M'75, Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1978 through the efforts of Dr. Byron Hartunian and the medical class of 1975 in memory of Dr. George Marina. The income of this fund is to be used to support a deserving and needy student.

Myron W. Marr, M.D., Scholarship Fund. Established by the benefaction of the late Dr. Marr, a liberal arts graduate of 1904 and a medical school graduate of 1907, the fund is designated for scholarship aid to needy and academically qualified medical students.

Dr. Eliza Melkon Scholarship Fund. Established in 1971 through the generosity of Dr. Eliza Melkon, M'16, pioneer practitioner in peripheral vascular diseases, to provide encouragement and financial aid to worthy and needy students of the medical school with preference given to those of Armenian descent.

Charles E. Merrill Scholarship Fund. Established in 1977 by The Charles E. Merrill Trust to provide scholarship assistance to medical students in financial need. The aim of the fund is to help ensure adequate representation of persons from all races and economic groups at the School of Medicine.

Richard T. Mulvanity Scholarship Fund. Established in 1986 by the bequest of Mrs. Mary Mulvanity in memory of her husband, Richard T. Mulvanity.

Mildred Ann Myerson Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in memory of the wife of Paul G. Myerson, M.D., professor emeritus of psychiatry, to benefit a student who, after finishing her or his third year, has demonstrated praiseworthy humanitarian qualities and strength of character.

Edward A. Nalebuff, M.D., Scholarship Fund. Established in 1983 by Dr. Edward Nalebuff, M'53, to help students defray the expenses of a medical education. The income will be awarded annually to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence and financial need.

Julius Pinkus Scholarship Fund. Established in 1987 by the estate of Julius Pinkus, in memory of his parents, Barney and Toby Pinkus, and his brother, Louis Pinkus, M.D., medical class of 1925. This scholarship is to be given to one or more worthy students who are enrolled in the School of Medicine.

Charles J. Preefer, M.D., and Beatrice Preefer Scholarship Fund. Established in 1955 by Dr. Charles Preefer of A'27, M'30. The income from this fund is to be awarded on the basis of scholarship and need to a graduate of Tufts University who matriculates at the School of Medicine.

Elizabeth A. Riley Scholarship Fund. Established in 1922 by Elizabeth Riley, M.D., for the benefit of women students.

Dr. Garson M. Rosenblum Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1988 by Sadye F. Rosenblum as a memorial to her husband, Dr. Garson M. Rosenblum, M'28. The scholarship is to be awarded annually to a deserving senior medical student contemplating a career in orthopedic surgery and who also demonstrates both excellent academic performance and exceptional compassion for patients and humankind, qualities exemplified by Dr. Rosenblum.

Myron R. and Lillian Rosenthal Scholarship Fund. Established in 1974 by the children and grandchildren of Dr. and Mrs. Myron Rosenthal of Milton, Massachusetts, in honor of their 38th wedding anniversary. The earnings of the fund are to provide financial aid to individuals contemplating a practice in family medicine.

Stephen Gainsford Rothwell Student Aid Fund. Established in 1964 by Mrs. Margaret Rothwell in honor of Dr. Stephen Rothwell, this fund is to be used for scholarship aid.

Baruch J. Sachs, M.D., M'53, Scholarship Fund. Established in 1982 by David P. Sachs, A'81, M'85, in honor of his father Baruch Sachs, A'49, M'53. Scholarships from this fund are to be awarded to deserving medical students on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.

Dr. Benjamin Sachs Scholarship Fund. Established in 1944 by the bequest of Angeline Kitson, and available to second, third, and fourth year students.

Dr. Salvatore and Susan Sannella Scholarship Fund. Established in 1983 by Dr. Salvatore (M'18) and Susan Sannella. The income from this fund shall be used to aid qualified, needy students at the medical school.

Nicholas S. and Edith E. Scarcello Scholarship Fund. Established in 1980 by Dr. and Mrs. Nicholas Scarcello. The income from this scholarship is to be awarded annually to one or more deserving medical students who, without financial aid, would be unable to continue the study of medicine.

Dr. Harry Z. Silverman Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1957 by Mrs. Ethel Silverman as a memorial to her husband, Dr. Harry Z. Silverman, M'24. The income is to be awarded on the basis of scholarship and need to a deserving senior medical student.

Marjorie K. Smith (M'30), M.D., Scholarship Fund. Established in 1991 by Dr. Smith, this scholarship exists to assist deserving medical students, preferably women, who are enrolled in the M.D./M.P.H. program.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Spiva Scholarship Fund. Established by the bequest of Bertha Spiva in the name of her parents.

Hugo and Katherine Summerfield Scholarship Fund. Established in March 1980 by Harriet Huntington in memory of her parents, Hugo and Katherine Summerfield.

Dr. John D. Sweeney Scholarship Fund. Established in 1986 by bequest of former patient Olive B. Floyd. The income is to be used to assist a medical student, preferably one from the New England states, in need of financial assistance and having great promise in any field of medicine.

Emanuel and Mathilda Terner Scholarship Fund. Established in 1988 by Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Terner to provide financial assistance to a deserving graduate of Tufts University who matriculates at the School of Medicine.

Charles P. Thayer Scholarship Fund. Established in 1922 by Elizabeth Riley, M.D. for the benefit of women students.

Edith Rieva and Hyman S. Trilling Scholarship Fund. Established in 1989 in honor and memory of Dean Frank G. Wren and Professor Royal Steiner Van De Woestyne, to assist students who are interested in the study of geriatric medicine.

Dr. Anthony J. West and Frances West Scholarship Fund. Established in 1992 by the estate of Frances West, widow of Dr. Anthony J. West, M'28. This scholarship is to be awarded to deserving medical students who are of Lithuanian descent.

Clara S. Whitney Scholarship Fund. Established in 1954 under the will of Dr. Charles M. Whitney, Professor of Urology at the School of Medicine.

Mary H. Whitney Scholarship Fund. Established in 1954 under the will of Dr. Charles M. Whitney, Professor of Urology at the School of Medicine.

Laura R. Whitney Scholarship Fund. Established in 1954 under the will of Dr. Charles M. Whitney, Professor of Urology at the School of Medicine.

Milton O. (M'30) and Natalie V. Zucker Scholarship Fund. Established in 1987 by Milton O. Zucker, M.D., M'30, to help students who need added support to continue their training at the School of Medicine.

Private Endowment Trust (PET Funds)

The Private Endowment Trust supplements the financial aid distributed by the Alumni Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are awarded annually to third- and fourth-year medical students who have demonstrated academic merit and financial need.

Loan Funds

The following list of individual loan funds comprises the medical schools endowed funds. Eligibility for these awards is based on need as determined from an on-time, completed financial aid application (see instructions in F.A. guide). There are no separate applications for these funds. Eligibility is determined on an annual basis.

Dr. Stanley and Enid Alterman Loan Fund. Established to assist Jewish medical students. Funds are provided by an annual grant from the Stanley and Enid Alterman Philanthropic Fund of New Jersey.

Dr. Fred G. and Emily G. Arrigg Student Loan Fund. Established in 1975 by Dr. Fred G. Arrigg, M'47, for students in good academic standing who demonstrate financial need.

Dr. Henry H. Banks Student Loan Fund. Established in 1990 in honor of Dr. Henry Banks, Dean Emeritus of TUSM. The income from this fund will be given to medical students who are financially needy and who are in good academic standing.

Biguria Medical Student Loan Fund. Established in 1976 as a lasting memorial to Dr. Don Biguria by his colleagues and friends.

Harry Blotner Loan Fund. Established in 1959 by the late Dr. Harry Blotner, M'24.

The Lauro F. Cavazos Student Revolving Loan Fund. Established by the Tufts Medical Alumni Association as a lasting tribute to a dedicated and thoughtful dean (1974-1980).

The Dr. Paul and Elaine Chervinsky Student Loan Fund. Established in 1982 by Dr. Paul Chervinsky, M'52. Preference is given, whenever possible, to residents of greater New Bedford, Massachusetts.

The Oakley C. Curtis Loan Fund. Established in 1975 to provide loans for financially needy students.

Philip V. and Nancy Owens D. Fava Loan Fund. Established in 1974 to honor and perpetuate the memory of Dr. Philip V. Fava, a graduate of TUSM. This loan is open to all students, based on need and academic standing.

Dr. Raymond Flax Loan Fund. Established in 1971 by Dr. Martin Flax, Chairman of the Department of Pathology.

Charles Hayden Memorial Loan Fund. Established by the Charles Hayden Foundation.

Charles H. Hood Dairy Foundation Loan Fund. Loans are available within the limits of the fund to third- and fourth-year students from New England. A. I. Kaplan Loan Fund. Established in 1952 by A. I. Kaplan to provide loans to deserving medical students.

W. K. Kellogg Foundation Loan Fund. Loans are available within the limits of the fund to all students in amounts not exceeding $500 per academic year.

Kinsella Student Loan Fund. Established in 1969 by friends and relatives of Dr. Michael A. and Gertrude J. Kinsella as a revolving loan fund to aid needy medical students.

The Minnie and Joseph, M'33, Kirsner Prize. Established in 1983 by Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Kirsner. This prize is to be awarded to the senior medical student who epitomizes, throughout medical school, the humanism and scholarship, which characterizes the "complete physician."

Simon Levi Loan Fund. Established in 1946 by Dr. Alexander A. Levi, M'26, in memory of his father, to provide loans to deserving medical students.

Chester W. Malmstead Loan Fund. Established by the bequest of Dr. Chester W. Malmstead, M'36.

The Charles F. and Kathleen McCarthy Loan Fund. Established in 1978 by Mrs. Kathleen McCarthy, in memory of her husband Charles, to provide loans to deserving medical students who are American-born and who have financial need.

Medical Alumni Loan Fund. Limited loans are available to students in good standing in the upper three classes.

Medical Dean's Loan Fund. Established in 1975 by the Dean of the medical school for medical students who are in good academic standing.

Medical Faculty Student Loan Fund. Established in 1981 with donations raised by a faculty-student loan drive.

Medical Long-Term Loan Fund. Established in 1932 by the students of the school as part of the Students' Activity Plan. Loans are available to second-and fourth-year students.

George W. Merck Memorial Loan Fund. Established in 1959 by the Merck Company Foundation for graduates of the TUSM postgraduate training, for interns and residents at Tufts-affiliated hospitals, and for needy medical students.

Mezer Family Student Loan Fund. Established to honor Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Mezer, M'21, of Miami Beach, Florida. The fund provides needed loans to academically qualified medical students.

Jessie Smith Noyes Loan Fund. Established by the Jessie Noyes Foundation in 1977 for needy medical students in good academic standing.

Dr. S. Jerome Port Loan Fund. Established in 1976 in honor of the late Dr. S. Jerome Port, M'57, by gifts from friends and grateful patients.

Samuel Proger Memorial Loan Fund. Established in honor and memory of Dr. Samuel Proger to provide loans for needy medical students. Dr. George Robertson Memorial Loan Fund. Established in 1981 in memory of Dr. George Robertson, M'43. The income from this fund is used to honor that student of the junior class at the Tufts University School of Medicine, who in kindness, character, integrity, and clinical acumen, shows promise of emulating Dr. Robertson.

Dr. Maurice, A'38, M'32, and Sylvia Segal Student Loan Fund. Established in 1959 by Dr. and Mrs. Maurice S. Segal.

TMCA Foundation, Inc., Medical Student Loan Fund. Established in 1982 by donations from the physician of TMCA Foundation, Inc.

Tufts Medical Student Aid Association Loan Fund. Originally established by the Tufts Medical Faculty Wives in 1970, funds for loans are raised each year by the Medical Student Aid Association. Needy second-, third-, and fourth-year students are eligible for these loans.

John C. Ward Student Loan Fund. Established in 1973 through the generous benefaction of Dr. John C. Ward, M'17, of Worcester, Massachusetts, for the sole purpose of making low-cost educational loans to students successfully pursuing studies for a career in medicine. Dr. Ward hoped that the fund would enable a number of deserving students to complete their education and make a better contribution to life.

Louis E. Wolfson Loan Fund. Established in 1957 by the late Dr. Louis E. Wolfson, M'19, for loans to fourth-year medical students.

Louis E. Wolfson Foundation Loan Fund. Established in 1983 by the late Dr. Louis E. Wolfson, M'19, to provide loans to needy Boston medical students.
