Outside Scholarships

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC)

The NHSC is a competitive federal program of service-obligated scholarship support. The scholarship benefits are: (1) payment of school tuition and required fees; (2) payment of a twelve month stipend; and (3) a lump sum payment to cover books, supplies, equipment and required transportation to clerkship. Medical students who receive the NHSC award agree to serve in physician-shortage area after completion of medical training in the practice of primary care: family practice, general internal medicine, and general pediatrics. Other specialties may qualify as need for those specialties, such as OB/GYN, occurs in the underserved areas. Interested students must contact NHSC directly at:

Indian Health Service Scholarship

This program is available only to Native Americans or Alaska Natives and pays full tuition, other costs of medical education and a monthly stipend. Recipients must serve a year for each year of scholarship assistance they receive. Interested students should contact:

Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarships Program (AFHPSP)

The Armed Forces Health Profession Scholarship Program is intended to recruit personnel to alleviate a shortage of physicians serving military personnel and their dependents. To be eligible students must be a U.S. citizen, enrolled in or accepted by a medical school and meet the eligibility requirements for appointment in the U.S. Armed Forces. Tuition, books and fees are paid for, and students also receive a living stipend (for 10 1/2 months). The remaining time is spent as a U.S. Reserve Second Lieutenant on Active Duty for Training with full pay and allowances.

Massachusetts Army National Guard Medical Student Loan Commissioning Program

This program allows an individual enrolled in medical school to be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Medical Service Corps, and upon graduation be promoted to Captain. Individuals are not required to attend basic or active duty training to qualify, but must be enrolled in or accepted by a medical school, participate in a flexible training program of 16 hours each month and 15 days annually and meet the eligibility requirement in accordance with current regulations.
