M'13 Problem Based Learning Program Memo

To: The Class of M'2013.

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is a one of your courses that is scheduled for every Friday afternoon from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. A two-hour session each week is scheduled for PBL in both the first and second years in which groups of 5-6 students meet with a facilitator to discuss the description of a patient with a particular problem. The case serves as a focal point for the discussion of basic principles, formulation of hypotheses and the development of various learning skills. Over the past several years some of our faculty has been finding it difficult to arrange time to serve as facilitators during the Friday 1:00-3:00 p.m. time period. Therefore, we have asked for students to volunteer to attend alternate PBL sessions on Wednesdays from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Students who sign up for the Wednesday sessions would then have Friday afternoons free from 9/11 through 11/20.

If you are interested in changing your PBL session day from Friday to Wednesday or if you have any questions regarding this memo, please call Donna or Kasia at 617 636-2400. The space in these alternative groups is limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Please note:

  • This sign-up is for the Fall semester only.
  • Small group assignments will be posted the week before PBL begins.
  • Students who are in combined degree programs need to be sure they don't have any conflicts on Wednesdays 4:00-6:00pm.
