Orthopaedic Surgery

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery consists of board certified clinicians in an array of musculoskeletal specialties including orthopaedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, rheumatology, physical therapy and occupational therapy.

The Department provides treatment for all musculoskeletal disorders including arthritis and joint reconstruction, athletic injuries and sports rehabilitation, diagnostic and reconstructive arthroscopy, hand and microvascular surgery, foot and ankle surgery, back and spine surgery care, congenital anomalies, cerebral palsy and neuromuscular disease, pediatric orthopaedics, bone and joint infections, fractures and soft tissue injuries, tumors of the skeleton, scoliosis and spine deformity.

Care involves diagnosis and treatment planning, including medical and physical modalities and surgical interventions.

The orthopaedic faculty teaches students during all four years of their medical school education, including selectives, physical diagnosis, surgical core, and specialty electives. Electives are available in adult orthopaedics, pediatric orthopaedics, hand surgery and sports medicine. Electives are offered at the Tufts Medical Center and at various Tufts-affiliated hospitals, including the New England Baptist Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, St. Elizabeth's Hospital, the Boston V.A. Medical Center, and with community orthopaedists. The Tufts-Affiliated Hospitals Orthopaedic Residency includes resident education and subspecialty fellowship training in hand surgery and sports medicine.

In addition to the various clinical aspects of orthopaedic disorders, research interests include outcomes studies, mechanical and bioengineering, and molecular pathology of musculoskeletal disease.
