Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery
Tufts medical students have
contact with the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery in
several ways: (1) in the physical diagnosis course in which the students
are taught the method of the otolaryngological examination; (2) during the
third-year clerkship in general surgery when each student spends one week
of the clinical specialties rotation in the otolaryngology department; and
(3) in a one-month elective offered to fourth-year students at several of
the Tufts-affiliated hospitals and in the private offices of practicing
otolaryngologists (see catalog on electives). Second-year students may
take an otolaryngology elective on Tuesday afternoons.
The
department offers an active five-year Otolaryngology Residency Training
Program. Ongoing research projects include otopathology, laser and optic
systems research including a laser spectroscopy program in conjunction
with MIT, research on otitis media, protocol evaluation of the treatment
of malignancies of the head and neck, voice disorders, and endoscopic
evaluation of middle and inner ear disorders. Students are welcome to
participate in such projects as their time permits.
