Psychiatry
The Department of Psychiatry provides courses and clerkships for
medical students in the preclinical and clinical years. In the preclinical
years, basic science concepts necessary to understand development,
psychopathology, and the doctor/patient relationship are presented. In the
third year, a comprehensive clinical clerkship based on the preclinical
foundation is presented to facilitate an understanding of psychiatric
diagnosis and treatment.
A variety of elective experiences are
offered to first- and second-year students and elective clerkships are
available in the fourth year. These may include summer research or
clinical experiences for first- and second-year students. Tutorials and
elective seminars can also be arranged for students at any level of
training.
These educational and clinical experiences are provided
at the Tufts Medical Center and other Tufts-affiliated hospitals and
programs. Our comprehensive clinical program offers a full range of
diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients who require inpatient,
ambulatory or emergency care. It also provides consultation to other
medical specialties.
The department has a residency training
program in adult and child psychiatry, as well as a Triple Board program.
There are also fellowships for advanced training in clinical
psychopharmacology and consultation/liaison, geriatric psychiatry, and
emergency psychiatry.
Research within the department has expanded
to include eating disorders, autism, substance abuse, Alzheimer disease,
and schizophrenia.
