Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
This department offers medical students in all four years the
opportunity to become familiar with the specialty of physical medicine and
rehabilitation, and the comprehensive management of disease and trauma
from acute illness to independent function.
During the first and
second years, faculty of the department participate in a number of
courses. The department plays a major role in the third-year clinical
specialties rotation. Students may also arrange to attend clinics and
rounds to participate in patient care with the Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation team.
Four-week, or longer, clerkships are
available for third- and fourth-year students in a variety of general and
subspecialized areas within rehabilitation medicine, including pediatric
rehabilitation and electrodiagnosis.
Postgraduate residency
training, leading to board eligibility in the physical medicine and
rehabilitation specialty, as well as numerous fellowships and research
opportunities are offered at the Rehabilitation Institute and
Tufts-affiliated hospitals.
Postgraduate continuing education
programs are offered on a periodic basis. The department also participates
in basic and advanced courses for students in allied health professions
Multidisciplinary research focuses on the areas of pediatric
rehabilitation, rehabilitation engineering, and rehabilitation management
of trauma and severe disability. The department offers a well-balanced and
broad-based clinical, teaching, and research program for students to
become well-versed in the fundamentals of the practice of physical
medicine and rehabilitation.
