MD Program -- Maine Track Admissions
Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM), in partnership with Maine Medical Center (MMC) in Portland Maine, offers a "Maine Track" for applicants who are interested in a unique, innovative curriculum that will provide clinical training experiences in Maine and expose medical students to the unique aspects of rural practice as well as training in a major tertiary medical center.
Legal residents of the state of Maine will be given preference. Other applicants with strong ties to Maine (such as primary undergraduate institution in Maine) and those with an interest in the practice of rural medicine are encouraged to apply. Applicants will apply through our Secondary Application website where you should submit a Maine Track application in addition to your MD application.
Applicants who submit a Maine Track application will be reviewed for the two separate tracks: the Maine Track and the regular M.D. Track. Applicants who are selected to be interviewed for the Maine Track will be invited to an Interview Day at Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME. In addition to their Interview Day in Portland, these applicants will be invited to attend an informational session on our Boston Campus. Applicants who are selected to be interviewed for the regular M.D. Track will be invited to an Interview Day at Tufts in Boston. Applicants can be selected to interview at both sites and be considered for admission to both Tracks.
Admission to either Track will be reviewed at the monthly meeting of the TUSM Committee on Admissions following your interview. Students will be reviewed for the Track that they interviewed for in the previous month and will receive a decision regarding that Track. Admission to the Maine Track will be jointly selected by committees representing both Tufts University School of Medicine and Maine Medical Center. Applicants who are admitted to both tracks will be able to choose the one most preferred.
Applicants to the program may, at any time, withdraw their application from consideration for the Maine Track, at which point they will continue to be considered for a position in the regular M.D. track.
The number of positions available in the Maine Track is limited. Failure to be accepted into the program will not adversely affect the chance of being admitted to the regular M.D. track.

In addition to the standard "Maine Track" we offer a Maine Track Early Assurance Program for eligible students at participating institutions. The institutions currently in this program are: Bates College, Bowdoin College, Colby College and University of Maine (all campuses). This early assurance program offers successful applicants acceptance into the Maine Track of TUSM at the end of their sophomore year. As long as accepted applicants continue to fulfill all eligibility requirements, they will be guaranteed a seat in the entering medical school class two years later as part of the Maine Track program.
