Senegal
The
financing of health services is public in Senegal, and the government
provides the health structure and services and pays
healthcare workers. Antibiotics are provided legally only by prescription.
But prescription control process, established by
the Ministry of Health, is not followed. The patient pays a
small co-pay per consultation. Acute respiratory infections are
the primary cause of death in infants (0-3 months). There is a
need for accurate studies on antibiotic resistance. Resistance in
tuberculosis treatment is a problem. Penicillin is considered a
miracle drug by most of the population and is overused in
injection form.
Chapter objectives:
- Announce official
establishment of chapter through an
international symposium on antibiotics in developing
countries.
- Evaluate
antibiotics use (study the composition of
prescription antibiotics in health districts).
- Develop
workshops on prudent use to be presented to
groups of physicians in 500 clinics and 200 pharmacies in
Senegal.
