Fiji

APUA-Fiji was founded in April of 2003. The chapter aims to create awareness about the dangers of improper antibiotic usage in the health professional community; to develop educational materials on proper antibiotic usage; to engage and support healthcare personnel in research and educational projects; and to provide a multidisciplinary approach to interventions enabling scientifically sound solutions.

Information about AMR in Fiji is available through laboratory surveillance of common pathogens. This surveillance data is used to evaluate and modify hospital and national antibiotic guidelines.

The chapter plans to hold a workshop for healthcare workers at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital about the rational use of antibiotics, and later another at the divisional level. In addition, the chapter plans to strengthen lab surveillance systems and use the media to inform the public about the importance of appropriate antibiotic use.
