United Kingdom

APUA- United Kingdom was founded in May of 2003 in affiliation with the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. Members were drawn from the Society and the two organizations will support each other and collaborate.

Chapter Achievements & Ongoing Activities

  • In February 2008 the Department of Health released a new Public Education Campaign, with the main messages on posters and leaflets to be displayed in general practice surgeries and in newspapers and magazines read, particularly, by young adults with children.
  • The Department of Health and British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) are producing guidelines on the control and management of MRSA and /Clostridium difficile/; both of these contain patient information leaflets.
  • England is leading a European project ‘e-Bug’ which aims to produce an educational pack and complimentary website with web-based games for junior and senior schools, to be launched in summer 2009. The draft packs are currently being evaluated in schools in the Czech Republic, England and France.
  • The BSAC, Health Protection Agency (HPA) and DH have sponsored a microbe and antibiotic science road-show. The aim of the road-show is to teach the general public about microbes and prudent antibiotic use and how to reduce the spread of infection and antibiotic resistance through improving hand and respiratory hygiene road-show was attended by over 10,000 people over 5 days in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire (please see photos of science show below)
