About the US Healthcare Lecture Series Since 1996, APUA has conducted a series of lectures for primary care providers,
pharmacists, and medical students on the topic of antibiotic use and resistance.
The lectures, which provide continuing education (CME and CEU) and risk
management credits, are intended to build awareness about the problem of
antibiotic resistance amongst those who have a major influence over its use,
and to encourage them to examine and improve their use of antibiotics.
The lectures are typically conducted during annual meetings of professional
associations of health care providers, and are tailored to the specific target audience.
The overall objectives of the program are to help practitioners to:
- Understand the dynamics of how resistance to antibiotics is selected and
spread among bacterial strains in patients;
- Appreciate the extent to which antibiotic resistance affects their ability to
treat infections;
- Consider how health practitioners' practices may influence the spread of
antibiotic resistance;
- Identify diagnostic and treatment techniques to decrease the emergence and
dissemination of antimicrobial resistance;
- Identify methods to educate patients regarding antibiotic use and to work with
them to reduce antibiotic misuse and the emergence of resistance; and
- Provide guidelines regarding the prudent use of antibiotics.
The lectures are conducted by a panel of national experts in internal medicine, pediatrics, infectious diseases and allergy immunology.
APUA healthcare lectures are attended by thousands of primary care providers including physicians and nurse practitioners in the U.S. The minimum
audience is 200 people, while the average is 500.
