UPCOMING EVENTS:


February 26-29, 2012: ASM's 10th Biodefense and Emerging Diseases Research Meeting in Washington, DC. This conference will focus on research pertaining to biothreat agents, vaccines, detection and diagnostic procedures, animal and plant pathogens, biosecurity facilities, global surveillance, the training of individuals in BL3 and BL4 labs, and other vital topics.


March 29-April 2, 2012: ASM's 11th Conference on Candida and Candidiasis in San Francisco, CA. This conference will provide a forum for the Candida research community to present the most recent advances and ideas, covering a broad spectrum of subjects from clinical issues to molecular mechanisms, from growth of the fungus to response of the host, as well as tochart the course of future research and facilitate the urgent need to understand, treat, and prevent candidiasis.


April 13-16, 2012: SHEA's inaugural training conference on Advancing Healthcare Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Stewardship in Jacksonville, FL. This conference will merge lectures, practical sessions, competitions, and leadership meetings to address the increasingly challenging issues in antimicrobial stewardship and demonstrate various approaches to research within the field.


May 6-10, 2012: ASM's 4th Conference on Prokaryotic Cell Biology and Development in Montreal, Canada.  The goals of this conference are to bring together researchers using the most sophisticated approaches to address the most important questions in the field of prokaryotic cell and developmental biology, and provide a forum for them to share ideas.


June 13-16, 2012: 15th International Congress on Infectious Diseases (15th ICID) in Bangkok, Thailand.


June 16-19, 2012: ASM's 112th General Meeting in San Francisco, CA.  


June 26-29, 2012: ASM's 3rd Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance in Zoonotic Bacteria and Foodborne Pathogens in Aix-en-Provence, France.


September 9-12, 2012: Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) in San Francisco, CA.  


September 29- October 4, 2012: ASM's 6th Conference on Biofilms in Miami, FL.


October 17-21, 2012: IDSA's inaugural IDWeek will be held in San Diego, CA. IDWeek will feature the latest science and bench-to-bedside approaches in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and epidemiology of infectious diseases, including HIV, across the lifespan. Partners include the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA), and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS).


October 22-26, 2012: ASM's 4th Conference on Beneficial Microbes in San Antonio, TX.


October 27-31, 2012: APHA's 140th Annual Meeting and Expo will be held in San Francisco, CA on the topic of "Prevention and Wellness Across the Life Span." The APHA meeting attracts more than 13,000 national and international physicians, administrators, nurses, educators, researchers, epidemiologists, and related health specialists to address current and emerging issues in health science, policy, and practice.



PAST EVENTS:


November 14 to November 20th, 2011, was "Get Smart About Antibiotics Week," the CDC's annual national campaign for appropriate antibiotic use in the community. APUA was proud to be a strategic partner and lent expertise in a live Twitter event hosted by ABC News' senior health and medical editor Dr. Rich Besser.


From November 14 to November 18, 2011, the Third International Conference for Improving Use of Medicines (ICIUM) was held in Antalya, Turkey. Conference atendees presented and summarized knowledge about ways to improve medicines use and health, especially for vulnerable populations. Participants helped to shape evidence-based policy recommendations and a future research agenda on these topics.


The 49th Annual IDSA/HIVMA Meeting took place from October 20 to October 23, 2011, in Boston, MA. The meeting brought together physicians, scientists, and other health care professionals involved in research, patient care, public health, disease prevention, and education in the field of infectious diseases. APUA showcased a booth throughout the meeting and presented a poster.


The 1st Global Forum on Bacterial Infections took place from October 3 to October 5, 2011, in Dew Dehli, India. Researchers presented new data on antibiotic access and resistance, and policymakers, clinicians, public health program managers, and researchers debated policy innovations in low- and middle-income countries to address these critical questions.


On September 18, 2011, APUA celebrated its 30th anniversary with a symposium at the 51st ICAAC entitled "Novel Approaches to the Containment of Antibiotic Resistance in Industrial and Developing Countries: Celebrating 30 Years of APUA" followed by the Annual International Member Reception, at which the 2011 Leadership Award and the 2011 Chapter Leadership Award were presented to Dr. Giuseppe Cornaglia (of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases) and Dr. Kumud K. Kafle (of APUA-Nepal), respectively.


From September 18 to September 21, 2011, the American Society for Microbiology held the 51st Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC). More than 10,000 physicians, researchers, and other healthcare professionals from around the globe gathered to foster worldwide solutions to the problem of infectious diseases.


September 14, 2011 was the "Building Stewardship: A Team Approach" educational program co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors, Tufts Medical Center, UMass Memorial Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and APUA.

September 7, 2011 was the "Building Stewardship: A Team Approach" webinar.


From August 24 to August 28, 2011, the Sociedade Brasileira de Infectologia (SBI) held the Infecto 2011 Brasilia on the topics of hospital-acquired infections, viruses (such as hepatitis and HIV/AIDS), and antimicrobials.


June 13-17, 2011 was the 38th Annual International Conference on Global Health in Washington D.C.


May 7-10, 2011 was the 21st ECCMID/ 27th ICC in Milan, Italy.


April 27, 2011 was the WHO Global Forum: Addressing the Challenge of Noncommunicable Diseases in Moscow.


April 9, 2011 was the American Symposium on Antibiotic Resistance and Appropriate Antibiotic Use at the XV Pan American Congress of Infectious Diseases 2011 in Punta del Este, Uruguay.


On April 7, 2011: The World Health Organization, in collaboration with APUA and other organizations, will launch the worldwide campaign, World Health Day, to prevent and contain antimicrobial resistance.

On April 7, 2011, APUA co-sponsored a web-based event in Spanish: Curso Virtual "Como interpretar un antibiograma."


April 1-4, 2011 was the 21st Annual Scientific Meeting of SHEA, at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas.


From February 27 to March 10, 2011, WHO, APUA, RSPRUD, and ISPOR offered a 12 day course, "International Training Course on Promoting Rational Use of Drugs in the Community" at the Institute of Health Management Research, Jaipur.


On January 25, 2011, Pew Charitable Trusts and the Center for Science in the Public Interest held a conference called "Managing the Risk of Foodborne Hazards: STECs (Shiga Toxin-producing E. coli) and Antibiotic-Resistant Pathogens." Dr. Stuart B. Levy was invited to speak and APUA Program Manager, Carol Cogliani, attended as an invited guest.

November 15-21, 2010 was "Get Smart About Antibiotics Week", the CDC's national campaign for appropriate antibiotic use in the community.  APUA is proud to be a partner of the campaign.


On November 12, 2010, World Pneumonia Day focused attention on the 1.5 million children who die each year from pneumonia, 98% of whom live in developing countries. These are largely preventable deaths contingent upon access to effective antibiotics. Read more about what APUA is doing in Africa to tackle the emergence of antibiotic resistance and increase access to these drugs for this disease.


September 13, 2010 was APUA's Global Networking Reception on Antibiotic Resistance at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. APUA members and partners networked with international leaders while honoring Dr. Otto Cars, ReAct and Dr. Miguel Angel Peredo, APUA Mexico Chapter.
