APUA: Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics
http://www.apua.org

Kazakhstan

APUA-Kazakhstan was founded in January of 2003. Its aims are to optimize antibiotic use, slow the growth rate of antibiotic resistance, and increase awareness of the problem among both health care professionals and consumers in the Central Kazakhstan region. There is currently no monitoring of antibiotic resistance at the national level. However, chapter leaders report that antibiotic resistance data has been collected by local and regional hospitals. Unfortunately, these data show a steady increase of antibiotic resistance in hospital strains from 1985 to 2001.

The chapter plans to complete the following activities over the next two years:

  • conduct a survey on the use of antibiotics for the treatment of acute bronchitis in primary healthcare practice.
  • conduct a survey on the use of antibiotics in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia in hospitals.
  • Instate monitoring of antibiotic use in contaminated surgery departments in two public city hospitals and two public regional hospitals.
  • Hold training courses on the rational use of antibiotics for health care practitioners semi-annually.
  • Hold annual conferences on the rational use of antibiotics.
  • Form connections nationwide with other specialists interested in problems resulting from misuse of antibiotics.
